Introducing // gal-dem
We're all about supporting Peckham’s grassroots creators. So we couldn't be more excited to welcome creative collective, gal-dem into their new studio. gal-dem is a magazine, both in print and online, written and run exclusively by women and non-binary people of colour. They'll be moving in to one of the 50 private studios at Peckham Levels, using it as their base to keep creating, growing and building up the gal-dem community!
The aim of gal-dem is to open up their take on the world to a wider audience. They want people from all backgrounds to engage with the influential work they do.
“It’s no secret that the mainstream media doesn’t represent or reflect us, so we are doing it for ourselves.”
gal-dem is made up of over 70 women and non-binary people of colour. Most of the team are based in the UK, but there are a few members farther afield, including the US and Hong Kong. Their core editorial team is made of 18 women, all of whom will be making their mark on their new chapter within Peckham Levels.
What are your hopes for Peckham Levels?
“We want to get bigger, bolder and better. We’re hoping to launch an internship scheme to bring in more of the Peckham gal-dem. And by the end of the year we want to have a strong business plan in place so that we can move forward and become a long-lasting independent organisation and magazine.”
