We are hiring! Head of Marketing at Peckham Levels

Peckham Levels aims to support local talent and enterprise, and also to create a real community asset for Peckham. We bring our members together with local people, businesses, groups and schools to share the benefits of the space.

All our members are independent businesses, mostly drawn from the local area, and all of them participate in a structured scheme of community projects. Our scheme includes a series of initiatives offering free event space, training, education and employment opportunities for Peckham’s residents. A percentage of all the project's profits will be used to create a Community Fund that invests in local businesses and social projects.

We are a small team with a start-up mentality, where everyone goes beyond the call of duty to achieve our ambitious goals. We are looking for talented, flexible people who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and are driven by the opportunity to inspire positive social change. Peckham Levels is a subsidiary of Make Shift, a company that designs, builds and manages new public destinations where communities, local entrepreneurs and independent, social businesses come together to trade, learn, grow and collaborate.


The Head of Marketing is responsible for generating interest in Peckham Levels as a multi-faceted community project, creative space and unique venue, in order to:

  1. Drive the success of our Member businesses (F&B, Retail) through delivering consistently high visitor numbers to the project throughout the year.
  2. Engage the local Peckham community in the project and raise awareness of Peckham Levels as an open, inclusive environment.
  3. Encourage engagement with our Social Action programmes and projects, both internally (members, staff) and externally (3rd party organisations, partners).
  4. Help fuel the growth of our Member Businesses (Studios and Creative) by telling their stories and generating interest.
  5. Drive the project’s commercial success by marketing Peckham Levels’ unique office spaces, studios, co-working and events.


We know that good marketers come in all shapes and sizes, and from diverse backgrounds. What’s most important to us is that you:

  • Are a creative ninja - you can think round corners and perform dizzying feats of mental acrobatics when it comes to solving complex challenges with simple solutions.
  • Love to learn - we’re a close-knit team, and often collaborate on projects outside of our expertise. We need someone who can thrive on the positive but can also take feedback constructively and, vitally, use what they’ve learned to get better.
  • Like being accountable - in our small team, we’re each directly responsible for our own work and we need someone who is able to take responsibility immediately and effectively from day one.   
  • Are an all-round marketing whizz - you’re what boring people might call a ‘T-shaped marketer’, with a broad base of skills and experience and particular depth in one or two areas.

What this is likely to mean in real life, is:

  • You have 3-5 years of experience, gained in-house or at a full-service marketing agency.
  • You have designed, planned, and run end-to-end marketing campaigns and can tell us about the results you’ve achieved with them.
  • You think objective-first, and are obsessed with the outcomes, not your inputs.
  • You think strategically, and understand the technical nitty-gritty of marketing.
  • You have self-managed a diverse workload, prioritising and making difficult decisions about which activity will have the greatest effect.
  • You’re great with people, and have managed multiple stakeholder relationships productively.
  • You have managed the commissioning and production of the design assets you need to execute high-impact marketing campaigns.
  • You may not love data, but you understand its importance and can pull together a performance report that allows you to track, optimise and report on your activity.
  • Ideally, you know and love Peckham and South London - you get the vibe, and want to be part of the growth of the area as a creative and entrepreneurial community.


We’ll measure your success against KPIs in three main areas, and you’ll work with the Project Director at Peckham Levels and the Make Shift Marketing Lead to set ambitious, but achievable, targets.

Location: Peckham Levels, though occasionally you may be required to travel to other Make Shift sites as required by the role.

Working Days and Expected Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, with flexible start times and a 1-hour lunch break every day.

Holiday: 25 days plus Bank Holidays. Additionally, you can buy or sell up to 5 days annual leave per year.


Stage 1 - Telephone Interview - a 30-minute initial chat with the Make Shift Marketing Lead.

Stage 2 - Informal In-Person Interview - a 60-minute meeting with the Make Shift Marketing Lead and one or two members of the Peckham Levels team. You may be required to prepare a task for this stage.

Stage 3 - Final in-person interview- the final stage is a presentation to the Peckham Levels team, followed by some questions, lasting around 90 minutes. You will be required to prepare and present tasks during the course of your presentation at this stage.
